Security Best Practices

Keeping your digital assets secure starts with understanding how self-custody works—and how to protect yourself.

WireUp is built with strong security defaults, but your actions are just as important. Following these best practices can help protect your wallet, assets, and transactions.

1. Protect Your Recovery Phrase

Your recovery phrase is the backup key to your wallet.

Do:

  • Write it down and store it offline.
  • Keep multiple secure backups.
  • Consider storing it in a fireproof or metal backup.
  • Treat it like cash, jewelry, or other valuables.

Never:

  • Share it with anyone.
  • Take screenshots.
  • Store it in email, notes apps, or unencrypted cloud storage.
  • Enter it into websites, forms, or messages claiming to be WireUp Support.

WireUp will never ask for your recovery phrase.

2. Secure Your Device

Your device is the first line of defense for your wallet.

We recommend:

  • Enabling Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint authentication, or other biometric security.
  • Using a strong device passcode.
  • Enabling automatic screen lock.
  • Keeping your operating system up to date.

Avoid using rooted or jailbroken devices whenever possible.

3. Verify Addresses Before Sending

Blockchain transactions are generally irreversible.

Before sending cryptocurrency:

  • Double-check the recipient's wallet address.
  • Confirm the blockchain network matches the asset.
  • Watch for clipboard hijacking malware.
  • Consider sending a small test transaction before transferring large amounts.

Once confirmed on the blockchain, transactions generally cannot be reversed.

4. Understand Networks and Fees

Many transaction mistakes happen because the wrong blockchain network was selected.

Before sending assets, always verify:

  • Blockchain network
  • Asset or token
  • Destination address

Remember:

  • Tokens exist on specific blockchain networks.
  • The same token name may exist on multiple networks.
  • Sending assets on the wrong network may result in permanent loss.

5. Be Cautious with Links and Messages

Many scams rely on urgency, fear, or impersonation.

Be cautious of:

  • Fake support messages.
  • Links asking you to "verify" or "restore" your wallet.
  • Airdrops that require unexpected approvals.
  • Direct messages claiming your wallet is at risk.

If someone asks for your recovery phrase, it's a scam.

6. Review Transaction Approvals Carefully

Before approving any transaction:

  • Read what you're signing.
  • Verify the smart contract address.
  • Review requested token permissions.
  • Be cautious about granting unlimited token approvals.

If something doesn't look right, don't approve it.

7. Use Trusted Apps and Services

Only connect WireUp to trusted applications and services.

Examples include:

  • Reputable decentralized applications (dApps)
  • Well-known protocols
  • Official websites

Avoid:

  • Copycat websites
  • Random links shared on social media
  • Unknown projects promising guaranteed returns

When in doubt, take time to research before connecting your wallet.

8. Monitor Wallet Activity

Regularly review your:

  • Transaction history
  • Asset balances
  • Connected application permissions

Use block explorers to:

  • Verify transaction status
  • Confirm token transfers
  • Independently troubleshoot blockchain activity

Blockchain transparency is one of your best security tools.

9. Keep WireUp Updated

Software updates often include:

  • Security improvements
  • Bug fixes
  • Performance enhancements

Always:

  • Update WireUp when new versions become available.
  • Keep your device operating system current.
  • Install software only from official sources.

10. Plan for Recovery

Prepare before something goes wrong.

Make sure you:

  • Know where your recovery phrase is stored.
  • Understand how to restore your wallet.
  • Avoid relying on a single backup method.

Being prepared today can help prevent permanent loss of access in the future.
